Former Arsenal defender, Martin Keown, has advised Mikel Arteta’s side to sign Chelsea’s Willian instead of Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho.
Arsenal have been heavily linked with moves for both Brazilians, with Willian seemingly on the verge of moving to the North London club on a free transfer.
It has also been reported that Coutinho could also move to Emirates on loan this summer.
But Keown believes Willian is the superior signing and feels the 31-year-old should be the priority for the Gunners if it comes down to a choice between the duo.
“Coutinho has been linked with virtually everybody and seems, if I’m honest, a bit unsettled,” Keown told The Mirror.
“I think Willian is a safer bet. He is in the capital, he knows the Premier League very well, and he is a top performer.
“I think it is a huge loss for Chelsea. I think that is a fantastic bit of business. I have always been a real admirer of Willian.
“When I saw what he has been doing this year at Chelsea with his free-kicks and penalties, he is so reliable.
“He has had his misfortunes with Hazard being there. Sometimes he has had to play second-fiddle. Now he’s fighting for a place with Pulisic.
“I know there is a discussion over 2 or 3 years [contract], but I think he would be a really good acquisition for Arsenal.
“He comes in with a wealth of experience, and I like his work ethic.
“He’s someone who will always give you 100% and the right type of player to go into what is a really young Arsenal dressing room.”
